Effective
January 1, 2014, residents of Illinois will be allowed, with an Illinois
concealed carry license, to legally carry a concealed firearm within the
state. This new law also mandates that
the Illinois State Police adopt rules for standardized signs that property
owners can display prohibiting concealed weapons on their property. The sign that must be posted is a white
background depicting a black hand gun within a circle with a diagonal red slash
across the hand gun. The sign must be 4’
x 6” and must be conspicuously posted at the entrance of a building or its
premises.
All Boards
should consider adopting a policy about where and when concealed weapons may be
carried on the common area of an association.
If someone is caught bringing a concealed weapon into an area that is
designated as a no concealed carry area, they will be committing a felony. A felony is a crime punishable by death or a
prison sentence of more than one year. Because
of this, this Board authority to designate a no concealed carry area should not
be taken lightly. Forming a committee to
look into this is a very effective way for a Board to handle this situation.
