January, 2014 was the eighth coldest
January on record for Illinois and the third snowiest and every night in
January was below freezing. This kind of
weather definitely had an effect on the landscaping around the
Chicago area.
The large amount of snow removal operations
this winter caused damage to the turf, along driveways and streets, and salting
did damage to the turf and shrubbery adjacent to sidewalks, curbs and parking
lots. There was also a lot of damage caused
by salt spray from cars and trucks driving by.
Working with your landscape contractor to repair turf as soon as
possible will keep the aesthetics of the property intact. Raking up excess salt pellets on the grass
and reseeding as early as possible this spring will help minimize the damage. To recover from salt spray on evergreen
needles particularly, spray down the trees with water which should
significantly reduce branch death.
Some other specific areas of concern
will be broken tree branches, due to the strong winds and heavy snow, damaged
boughs and brown spots on evergreen trees and turf damage from snow mold.
We also cannot forget the wildlife
such as, rabbits, deer and coyotes as they forage for food.
An upside though to this harsh winter
will be the reduction in the insect population because of the extended periods
of freezing temperatures, although this will have to be monitored by your
landscaper.
These are a lot of landscape issues
for a Board to face but with the assistance of ACM Community Management and
your landscape vendor, your community will rebound and flourish.
